Family Medicine Service

UCN has developed its medical service in the field of family medicine since 1998. Situated in Kwun Tong, one of the earliest developed areas in Hong Kong, Jockey Club Wo Lok Community Health Centre was the first of our centres to practice family medicine, paving the way for other centres to follow the significant transformation. Now all centres are staffed by registered doctors professionally trained in family medicine.

  • What is Family Medicine?
  • What is Family Medicine?

Family medicine is the medical specialty which integrates theories and practices in biological, clinical and behavioral science.  Unlike other specialties which specialize in treating one particular organ system or disease, family medicine requires comprehensive knowledge in providing diagnosis, treatments, referral, counseling, health prevention and education, etc.  Served as a health coordinator, family physician provides comprehensive, continuing, whole person and preventive care to an individual and family.

    What is Primary Care?

The healthcare system of Hong Kong can generally be divided into three levels of care: primary, secondary and tertiary.  Primary care is the first point of contact in a continuing healthcare process while secondary and tertiary care mainly include specialist and hospital services.

Service provider of primary care is the first contact point when we are feeling unwell.  Family doctor is one of the primary care service providers to provide comprehensive, continuing, whole person and preventive care as well as to arrange multi-disciplinary coordination and referral.

What are the differences between Family Doctor and General Practitioner?

Family medicine is a medical specialty.  Upon completion of an undergraduate degree, a general practitioner should undergo a six-year on-job training program and pass the licensing exam in order to become a qualified “Specialist of Family Medicine”.  The six-year on-job training consists of four years of hospital-based and community-based training and two years of supervised independent practice.   In the whole process, family doctors undergo multi-disciplinary training of almost all specialties, including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology and pediatrics, etc. which enable them to have more in-depth training on medical knowledge, skills as well as doctor-patient relationship than a general practitioner.

What are the characteristics of a family doctor?

Family doctor aims at providing comprehensive, patient-centred and continuing care to patients, including treatment and counseling for both physically and mentally.

Family doctor will establish continuous relationship with patients in order to learn about their needs, background and family history so as to gain a better understanding of their physical, psychological and social conditions.  Keeping complete medical records is also an essential task of a family doctor which can ensure the provision of appropriate treatment, counseling, coordination/referral and continuing care.  Trust is then built up and patients can feel comfortable to follow a designated family doctor in the long run.  In addition, family doctor will also provide health risk assessment and make recommendation on preventive measures and screening methods.  Cervical screening for women and vaccination for child/elderly are examples of these aspects.

    Comprehensive and Patient-Centered Approach

To emphasis on the patient’s perspective within the context of family and community and to manage properly for patient’s physical, social and psychological factors.

    Continuing Care

A family doctor is a lifelong partner who develops a continuing relationship and trust with patients.  Patients and their family can be provided with effective healthcare service according to their changing needs and health conditions over the course of their lives.

    Preventive Care

Apart from treating illness, a family doctor also aims at maintaining patients’ health, modify their health risk factors and prevent diseases

    Multi-Disciplinary Coordinated Service

A family doctor serves as a coordinator to provide multi-disciplinary coordinated service and helps patients to receive the optimal care.

Why I need a designated family doctor?  What are the disadvantages of changing a family doctor frequently?

Family doctor focuses on communication with patients in order to learn more about their needs and to build mutual trust.  In such a long term and stable relationship, doctor can obtain patients’ complete medical record which assist in making accurate diagnosis and providing appropriate treatment and prescription.
On the contrary, if you change your family doctor frequently, the new doctor may not be able to get a full set of your medical record which may cause inaccuracy of diagnosis, repeat of unnecessary medical procedure or even delay of treatment progress.  Therefore, it is essential to have a designated family doctor to you and your family.

How to select a Family Doctor?

When selecting a family doctor, you should consider about the clinic location, opening hours, consultation fees as well as doctor’s spoken languages, etc. according to your individual needs.  Besides, a family doctor should also have multi-disciplinary medical knowledge to provide appropriate coordination and referral to other professionals, like specialists, physiotherapists, dietitians, etc.  It’s also essential for a family doctor to provide health preventive care and assessment services like vaccinations, health check, etc.

Last but not least, you should also pay attention to doctor’s professional qualification and see if they are participating in the continuing medical education program.
